Your Songs

I was on the train yesterday doing some work and listening to a playlist on shuffle when ‘Rain King’ by Counting Crows came on. Which is, by any definition, an absolute banger.

More than that, since I first heard it at the age of 15, I’ve regarded it as “My Song”. In the way that couples have ‘our song’ that’s about them in some way, Rain King makes me go “Yep, that’s it. That sums things up about me” whenever I hear it (And probably clears things up around the question ‘How big is Dave’s ego?’ if you listen to the lyrics).

The title comes from the book ‘Henderson the Rain King’ by Saul Bellow (another book I’ve never read and need to put on the list) and the lead singer Adam Duritz explained on VH1 Storytellers: “The book became a totem for how I felt about creativity and writing: it was this thing where you took everything you felt inside you and just sprayed it all over everything. It’s a song about everything the goes into writing, all the feelings, everything that makes you want to write and pick up a guitar and express yourself. It’s full of all the doubts and the fears about how I felt about my life at the time.”

So it makes sense a pretentious, adolescent wannabe writer got so attached to it…

Anyway, the whole damn album puts me in an introspective mood and it got me thinking (as I stared melancholy-ly out of the window. Which is the correct way of listening to the album), does everybody else have a ‘My Song’? A piece of music that belongs to you or that defines you, or speaks to you and you alone? I hope so. I hope I’m not alone in this and reveals me to be as inward-looking and self-obsessed as I worry I am.

Then I remembered there’s the internet and I can send that sort of question into the ether on a weekend and see what happens. That’s kind of the point of the internet. That and cat videos.

So, do you have Your Song? If so, what is it? Let me know in the comments below, or reply on Twitter or Facebook and any reasons it makes it Your Song. I’ll also build a Spotify playlist from your answers so we can all revel in a Big Musical Catalogue of Us.

Ah, one of my personal favourites of all time!

  5. Jan says:

Supermassive Black Hole. Like you had to ask …

  6. David Searle says:

The Eagles’ “The Last Resort”. It’s wonderful and I’m trying to make up for the fact that, for reasons unknown, I never, ever, listened to the Hotel California album all the way through and managed to miss it for 40 years!

  7. Penny says:

Salisbury Hill – Peter Gabrielle. The very definite feeling that it’s not me it’s all the other buggers that are the problem, with eternal teenage curse of “you’ll all be sorry when I’m gone” that I was never quite stupid enough to say it loud but thought quite loudly many times….
